German studio ION LANDS announced the release of Phoning Home, an exploration game where the player guides a stranded robot in its attempt to contact the homeworld and escape. The game is available now on Steam, with Mac and Linux to follow.
The story follows ION, an explorer-robot shipwrecked on an uncharted planet who must find a way to survive in a hostile environment and send a distress signal home. During ION’s journey, he is joined another marooned robot named ANI. The team must rely on one another’s distinct abilities and strengths if either one is to have any hope of survival.
As an open-world game with active weather and a day-night cycle, the player guides ION and ANI across the planet, exploring landscapes ranging from tundra to forests to active volcanoes. The player will also encounter enemies, ranging from human-sized to colossus-tier, and will need to combine ANI’s offensive capabilities with ION’s maneuverability in order to fight or flee as appropriate.
During the course of the game, players will discover the remnants of an alien civilization and will be encouraged to decrypt their language and restore their technology. In addition, as the goal is to be able to call home to summon a pick-up, there is a crafting system. Resources found in the environment can be turned into tools and upgrades.
“Phoning Home is a captivating game full of secrets waiting to be uncovered and breathtaking environments to explore,” said Marko Dieckmann, founder, ION LANDS. “It’s been a wonderful experience seeing this project transform from a concept into reality and everyone on the team is eager for the PC gaming community to see ION and ANI’s story unfold.”
Phoning Home has full voiceovers in English and German, with localized subtitled versions available in Spanish, French and Russian. The game is priced at $19.99 USD/€19.99 via Steam. As a special offer, there is a 10% discount on the game during launch week.
