Sega has announced the release of Yakuza 0 in North America and Europe. The game is now available for PlayStation 4.
The game is set in the twilight of Japan’s bubble economy, when money flowed like water and there was no vice unavailable for those who could afford it. Yakuza 0, as can be guessed, is a prequel that tells the origin stories of series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, the rising Dragon of Dojima, and his rival Goro Majima, the future Mad Dog of Shimano. Players will guide the two as they fight, hustle, flirt, and dance their way through the criminal underground of Japan and attempt to regain their honor.
Appropriate for the era, cash is key in Yakuza 0, and players will need to get their hand on as much yen as they can. Unsurprisingly, there are nearly as many ways to spend, make, or take money in game as there are in real life. From cash spilling out of the pockets of gang members you fight to Telephone Clubs, Disco Halls, or even Pocket Circuit car races, wealth and the means to acquire it are everywhere. Of course, there are other criminals eager to make a yen, preferably by beating it out of your characters, so players have access to a new innovation in battle, where combat styles can be changed with a button press to address the situations the player will be battling through.
The game will receive a number of updates in the coming weeks that will automatically add free downloadable content to players who own the game. Each batch contains content such as new outfits, weapons, items, and crafting components. The first DLC pack is already live and three additional batches will be made available every week until Feb. 14. These goodies can be accessed in-game by talking to Bob the clown in front of the shrine in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori.
Yakuza 0 biohazard currently retails at $59.99. This title has been rated M for “Mature.”
