With the tagline “Strategy meets Drama,” mobile game Phantom of the Kill certainly seems like an appropriate title to host a crossover with the globally renowned anime franchise Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The event, running through March 29, will provide players with far more than token content.
Phantom of the Kill is a tactical role-playing game in which players command a team of warriors in a gauntlet of turn-based battles. Units grow in battle and can be promoted to higher classes. The setting is as cheerful as the game’s name: in a world controlled by demons, mankind is on the verge of extinction. Desperate to survive, mankind has decided to venture into the blasphemous and experiment with infusing normal people with the blood of beasts and the divine essence of legendary weapons. The survivors of such forbidden experiments are known as Killer Princes(ses).
The Killer Princesses are joined by the Puella Magi (Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, Sayaka Miki, Mami Tomoe, and Kyoko Sakura) in an original story that plays out across three worlds in a valiant effort for salvation. What distinguishes this from any other average mobile game crossover is the amount of effort put into it. The event enjoys cutscenes voiced by the original Madoka seiyuus.
After clearing certain stages in the Event quests, players will be rewarded with copies of both Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi in school uniform. Players can also unlock their Partner skill for additional firepower.
As can be imagined for a mobile RPG in the style of Fire Emblem, clearing an event stage has a chance of dropping Madoka-themed gear and recipes. By fusing them together, players can obtain gear for each character exclusive to the crossover. That gear can be enhanced even further through fusion.
The game is available via the App Store and Google Play and is free to download.
