The Year of the Rooster is finally upon us, and both online and around the world, the party is just getting started. Its a time of year for fire-crackers, delicious food, friendship, and yes, wishes for health and prosperity. And if your city doesn’t seem to be in much of a celebratory mood, worry not! Many of your favorite online game are hosting seasonal festivities with great rewards!
Here’s just a sample of what’s going on:
ArenaNet is hosting their annual Lunar New Year event in Guild Wars 2. Prove your mettle in the Dragon Ball arena, collect and open lucky envelopes to earn “essences of luck, delicious foods, fireworks, valuable items, and a chance to find the new Lucky Great Rooster Lantern backpacks”, and decorate your guild hall with Red Lanterns! And if you’re curious what’s in the store, you’ll find curious new items like a Celestial Rooster harvesting tool and new themed dye kits.
Blizzard is going all out with for the Year of the Rooster in both Heroes of the Storm (HotS) and Overwatch, with events in both games through February 13. In HotS, players can earn a Lunar Rooster Mount and Rooster Portrait by completing the daily Rooster Race, or if you prefer spending a bit of real-life gold, there are fancy new skins like Monkey King Samuro and Lunar Li-Ming in the shop, along with mounts like a Golden Rooster and the Monkey King’s iconic Nimbus Cloud.
In Overwatch, Blizzard has replaced their usual Loot Boxes with lucky Lunar Loot boxes, full of unique celebratory cosmetic items, including player icons, sprays, victory poses, emotes, highlight intros, and unique skins for unique skins for D.Va, Winston, Mercy and more. If you’re not feeling particularly lucky though, fear not, for you can unlock a variety of these customization options in the Hero Gallery for credits throughout the event’s duration, or enjoy Overwatch’s new game mode: Capture the Rooster.
En Masse Entertainment‘s TERA Online is having a Lunar New Year Sale, with up to 75 percent off of almost every item in the in-game shop. The sale began Thursday, January 26 at 10 a.m. PST, and will continue until Tuesday, January 31, at 10 a.m. PST.
Hi-Rez Studios is getting into the action as well, with SMITE offering players who login and play over Lunar New Year weekend (Jan 27-29) a chance to unlock one cosmetic item per day: a Chinese Avatar, a Firecracker Ward Skin, and Lunar New Year Avatar.
Perfect World Entertainment celebrates with giveaways to celebrate the launch of a new season in Star Trek Online (including free ships for all factions – available through Jan 30 at 9 am PST), and with the festivities of STO’s 7th anniversary.
And not to be outdone, Valve has released the special Dark Moon event in DOTA 2. From now through Monday, February 6, players can join this special queue and work together with a team to defend Selemene’s temple against waves of loathsome shades from the Dark Moon Horde. By surviving the ever-evolving assaults, players earn event points, which can be redeemed for rewards including the unique Immortal Dark Moon Baby Roshan courier of peerless origin.
